Homemade Hobnobs….

Becksie of A Year without Supermarkets fame, posted the link to this recipe on the A Year without Supermarkets facebook page, and I had been meaning to try it for ages.

Well, now I have.

And I may live to regret it.

Exactly how many hobnobs would you say were too many to eat in one day…??!

Apparently, January 12th was “International Homemade Hobnob Day”. How I missed this, I will never know. But I am making up for it now…

The recipe is from The Love of It, but a couple of people have since told me that it also on Martin Lewis’ Money Saving Expert site-and they are right! Here it is-called “Twink’s hobnobs”

Basically, I’m not sure whose recipe it is.

But here it is!

This is what you need:

  • 225g self raising flour
  • 225g sugar
  • 225g porridge oats
  • 225g margarine/butter
  • 1tbsp golden syrup
  • 1tbsp hot water
  • 1/2 tsp bicarbonate of soda

This is what you do:

  • Pre-heat the oven to 180C and grease or line at least 2 baking sheets
  • In a pan, gently melt the butter, syrup and water
  • While it is melting, mix together the flour, oats and sugar in a largish bowl. Add any extra ingredients you fancy like raisins or choc chips. (I went with tradition and left ours plain and unadulterated)
  • When the butter mix has melted, stir in the bicarbonate of soda, and then add it to the dry mix
  • Mix well, and then make kind of walnut sized balls (I got 36 from this amount of mix-the original recipe says 35-50, so mine must have been on the large side, but they weren’t that large, if that makes sense?!)
You will have to take my word for it as I neglected to put anything in for you to compare the size with...these are large walnut (in it's shell) size!

  • Bake in the oven-the original recipe says for 15mins, but I checked mine after 10 and they were done. They should be golden brown
  • Leave to cool for a few minutes before attempting to move them to a wire rack or they will crumble everywhere!
  • If you are feeling really crazy, you can make chocolate coated hobnobs, by coating them in chocolate…
  • Devour several in one sitting with a nice cup of tea!

    These look suspiciously like what we call ANZAC biscuits here in Australia. They were sent to the troops overseas because they apparently don’t go stale but ours never last long enough for me to confirm this. Loving your blog by the way

      Thanks Bron. They are very like Anzac biscuits, but without the dessciated coconut! I have made Anzac biscuits before-can’t decide which I like best-may have to make more to find out….!!

    Ooh these are great! Just made my second batch and cut the sugar by one third in a desperate attempt to avoid passing my very sweet tooth onto my kids – they’re still really good.

    Think you’ve started a hob nob revolution Jen! I added milk chocolate chips to my mix, baked half and froze the other half for a rainy day. My Big Small absolutely loves them!

      Hi Marcella. I’ve just googled it, and although I think it’s not exactly the same thing, I think light corn syrup is the US equivalent! Let me know how you get on 🙂

    Mmmmm. I love hobnobs. And they always make me think of the Peter Kay sketch about biscuit dunking…

    I was in the hairdressers yesterday and March’s Good Housekeeping magazine has recipes for recreating ‘shop’ biscuits- bourbons, custard creams, iced rings, jammy dodgers…
    I’ve made Nigella’s custard creams before and hubby liked them (they’re one of his favourite biscuits) but I love homemade garibaldi biscuits! This looks similar to my recipe.

      I’ve done the custard creams too-they are pretty yummy aren’t they?! I will see if my mum has the March GH, and if she can save it for me. Sounds like some good one’s to try, and I will definitely check out the garibaldi ones-thankyou!

    Legendary in my house, containing miscellaneous ingredients from my baking box. Dried apricots and cherry&coconut are my boys’ favourites. My man keeps telling me he likes the ones with chocolate chunks but those are just far too tasty for me to risk baking again!

      OMG-need to try them with choc chips! BigSmall was quite keen on coating one half in melted chocolate and making chocolate hobnobs. Quite glad I resisted-have eaten waaay to many as it is….

      You don’t have to tell me that! I made these last week, and stashed some in the freezer (they freeze very well btw) and have been known on occasion to eat the odd one (or two..) frozen….
