Fun Fun Fun…

May 11, 2013

This weekend was a Bank Holiday. And, amazingly, the sun shone 🙂

So what did we do..?

We cleared out our garage of course! (We did do lots of fun stuff too…)

Last week I confessed to the ‘dumping ground’ that is our spare room. Well, that is ONE of several dumping grounds. The outside dumping ground is obviously the garage…

It wasn’t a huge amount of fun, but quite satisfying. And we un-earthed a load of projects we had forgotten about…

I got this cable drum off Freecycle ages ago and we had grand designs of turning it into a table, although I think hubby is now eyeing it up as some kind of enormous back wheel for a go-kart...

A pair of chairs from the auction house and a standard lamp. The standard lamp is from my Nana's house, and we have no where to put it at the moment, but it is so lovely, I am loathe to part with it. The chairs have been waiting for me to sand, paint and (attempt to) re-cover them for over a year...

And I got these non-working sewing machines from Freecycle hoping that hubby would learn to repair and service sewing machines (in his spare time...!)

As you can see, we have a few bits and pieces to keep us busy for the rest of My Make Do and Mend Year (and beyond..)

I know you are all desperate to see what the end result was…

I will confess, this is not that impressive an improvement, but at least you can now walk from the front to the back without tripping over :)

Oooh, those cable drums were our children’s fave toys about ten years ago. They would roll each other around on them and do circus tricks in the yard. So much easier than turning it into a table. Well done on the garage tidy up. We had to do that in self-defence a few weeks ago..

You had to do a garage tidy up in self defence..? Circus tricks sound fab-might wait until they are a bit bigger though…!

Ah the garage, the last repository for stuff. We can’t even see the back wall in ours any more. I am always tempted just to have a freecycle come and get it event to clear it! It is also full of useful stuff to create into new things, alongside lots of damp camping items! More photos of dumping areas, it is so refreshing to see normal houses on blogs.

      Hi Anna
I think it is safe to say that this blog will never be one of those aspirational, slightly intimidating, and for me ultimately depressing (as it emphasises what a HUGE mess our house is!) blogs…!

We have a shed full of stuff like that!
I finally coerced hubby and kids into sorting out our woodpile. We mostly heat and cook with wood in the winter, so obviously accept any free wood. Between enormous logs and bags of scrap wood it had got rather out of control.
I started hand sawing the smaller stuff (who needs the gym?!) which had the desired effect of husband getting out the chain saw and doing the big bits. It’s now sorted and stacked with just some rounds left for splitting. I can get to the compost heaps again and I’ve found room to plant the 2 climbers I’ve wanted to put in for years- a tayberry and a Clematis Montana to brighten up the Willow tree in the corner.

    It’s very satisfying 🙂

PS- how are your new plants doing? Any signs of life?!

Will go out and have a peek tomorrow!

A garage…sigh! At London property prices I never have space to keep much stuff for future projects! I have a small under-stairs cupboard with all our camping gear, DIY, travelling bags, sewing machine, kids paraphernalia, boxed up childhood memories etc. To be fair even this small space seems to swallow things up – I bet there’s some hidden treasure I’ve forgotten about. Don’t think there’s a chance it will get sorted out until winter now though.

      Good luck!

Your garage is absolutely clear compared to ours. We have an old car(belongs to son who doesn’t live at home any more) and the part contents of my parents old home in ours, as well as all our junk, lawn mower etc!! And you certainly can’t walk through it! Waiting for a few warm days so we can at least get started to sort the bits we can get to.

      Warm days-that would be nice…

I love that cable drum. I saw a few the other day outside a storage place and would have loved to have taken one. I can so see it as a table. And I love the CD greenhouse. That is now a project for my hubby as we have loads of CD cases lying about the place.

We could get the hubbys to race…!

Looks a lot better then my garage. Beckington have a go- kart rally coming up in September….! Hope the dress making went well today. I think I *may* have a few mums at school who would like to make some dresses- I’ll email you 🙂

Hi Hayley. We meant to go to the go-karting last year but can’t remember why we didn’t make it! Slightly concerned at what hubby might make…
We are planning another sewing day provisionally on the 8th June, or can send you all the info if you want to do some as a group 🙂

        last year it rained….a lot!

        • Reply Jen May 11, 2013 at 9:15 pm

I think that may have been why we didn’t go…
