Buy Nothing Day

November 29, 2013

OK, so today is Black Friday-the biggest shopping day of the year.

If you’ve had enough already of the consumerism that our world seems to revolve around, before Christmas has even really got going, then how about Buy Nothing Day as an antidote to it all?
Buy Nothing Day this year, is tomorrow, the 30th November.

I blogged about this last year-Buy Nothing Day is a really simple idea. You can probably tell from the title, all you need to do, is Buy Nothing!
It bills itself as a “global stand-off from consumerism” and aims to challenge our consumer culture.

I know I’ve quoted this stat before, but it bears repeating, especially when it is the form of this great infographic from the Buy Nothing Day website

twenty-percent

From the Buy Nothing Day site

and we all know that that is not right, and it’s not fair.

As individuals, it might seem that there is little that we can do to change the stat, but we can.
By the choices we make, the things that we choose to buy, or perhaps more importantly, to not buy.
It’s not about being Scrooge and hating Christmas, or not supporting the economy. It’s about getting us all to stop and think, or re-think, our relationship with ‘stuff’, which, you may have noticed, I am all for!

So how about it then?
One day.
It won’t change the world, but it might just help us all stop and think, before we buy.

Need to buy Marmalade but nothing else! At this time of year I feel less inclined to buy anything I wish I could hibernate until it’s all over!

      Maybe we all should Petra!

See I didn’t even know Black Friday was a thing until a day or two ago, and now I learn of another new idea. I will do my best although I fear I may spend a small sum (under £1.00) on fruit or veg, but I will try to resist. Bit of forward planning. 🙂

I am so glad you put no shop day is tomorrow! I felt so guilty buying wine for tonight’s family celebration. I promise to be good tomorrow.

Nearly managed a no buy day! Might get away with it on a technicality! Had leftovers tonight but needed a cabbage too. Haven’t actually paid for it…doing that tomorrow, so in a way didn’t spend today. Slightly naughty but I am allowed to get away with it?

I work in a department store & rarely go to town shopping when I’m off. My 3rd Grandchild was born y’day so I’ve saved some holidays to help out. I’m so glad I have only been to local shops for food today especially after watching the news about Black Friday !
