Zero Waste Week 2014

August 11, 2014

Ever since going on a Rubbish Diet, to Slim our Bins, in the January of Make Do and Mend Year, I have been so much more aware of everything that we put in the bin.
I am now positively twitchy whenever we put anything in our black bin, and feel a big pang of guilt and have visions of whatever it is I’m putting in the bin sitting in landfill for years and years to come.
We’ve made some good changes to our lifestyle, and I heart our Green Johanna a LOT, but I have possibly got a little complacent and need a bit of a kick to move forwards and reduce our landfill waste even further.

So a big fat HURRAH for Zero Waste Week!

Now in it’s 7th year, Zero Waste Week 2014 is running from the 1st to the 7th September, and the theme for this year is “One More Thing”. What one more thing could YOU do to reduce the waste you send to landfill?

One easy thing is to sign up to Zero Waste thing, and make a pledge for your “One More Thing”

And another easy thing, is to have a look at the fabulous Zero Waste Week website-you can browse recipes to help you use up your leftovers, submit leftovers to share your waste busting genius with others, and get LOADS of ideas for re-use and recycling.

I was flattered to be asked by Rachelle, the Zero Waste Week founder, to be a Zero Waste Amabassador, and this is my Zero Waste Pledge selfie:

Yes, in a moment of insanity, I have pledged to go Zero Waste, for a whole week.
In my head, it sounded really achievable at the time, but now, as Zero Waste Week is creeping ever closer, I am starting to feel quite nervous.
I know that this is going to take some serious planning, and I am beginning to worry that I have been over-ambitious, as I don’t have a huge amount of time for planning between now and the 1st September-eeeeek!
BUT I am going to give it my best shot, and it would be awesome to get some more people on board and making pledges-you don’t have to go the whole hog-there are some great pledges being made-from doing a meal plan for the week, to buying only unpackaged fruit and veg, and avoiding single use items. You can pledge to do whatever you want/think is achievable (or crazily ambitious…!).
You just have to do “One More Thing”

Who’s in?!

I’m in! I need a kick too. I have stopped buying Tesco Finest Fishcakes since discovering I can’t put the tray in recycling, just lazy really, ought to make my own or just eat plain fish!
