11 reasons to join A Make Do and Mend Year

I have decided, perhaps a little belatedly, that 2018 is the year I am going to step up. I’m going to stop procrastinating, and being scared, and worrying. And I’m going to step into the knowledge and experience I have gained in sustainable living since our year buying nothing new in 2012.
It’s been an amazing journey, and I am so excited and encouraged to see so many people now also wanting to make positive changes in their lives that mean that they live more sustainably.
But I know that it’s not always easy.
I know it can feel lonely, and overwhelming, and confusing.

I’ve wanted for a long time now to be able to offer another level of support for those people who want a bit more than my big Make Do and Mend Life FB group can offer.
It’s an amazing place, and such an active and engaged community. It’s fabulous to see it grow, but it’s now got so big that it’s very hard for me to connect with everyone in there, and to provide that more personal support for those that need or want it.
Soooo, I’ve created a membership programme, called A Make Do and Mend Year, where I can do just that.
And here’s 11 reasons why you might want to join!

  1. First and foremost, community.
I want to recreate the community and comradery that exists in my big group, but in a smaller, more close-knit way. I want to really get to know the people on the course, their aspirations and their challenges. And I want you all to get to know each other too, so that we can connect and create a whole tribe of friends with a common goal.
  2. Resources
Finding the information you need, from a source you know you can trust can be tricky in the info-overloaded internet.
I’m not saying I have all the answers, or that my way is the right way, but I will share with you the things that I have tried and tested, my top tips, and the network of resources that I have built up over the last 5+ years.
  3. Managing overwhelm
Wanting to live more sustainably is a big goal. And one that affects all areas of our lives. It can feel like there is so much to do, and sometimes we give up before we’ve even started, because it just seems too hard.
The tools and resources in A Make Do and Mend Year have been designed specifically with this in mind, and we break the year down into 12 monthly topics, which we can focus on one at a time.
  4. Identifying and setting goals
For each area that we focus on each month, I will work with you to help you to identify the changes that YOU want to make, then to set some really specific goals, and create the action plan that you need to get you there.
  5. Accountability
Part of the community and the idea behind doing this as a group is to provide accountability for each other. Setting goals is all well and good, but if no-one else is going to know whether we’ve hit them or not, the temptation might be to slack off, or to give up when things get tough. Knowing that you’ve publicly shared your goals and your action plan with the community, can be a real motivator to keep going!
  6. Expert advice
I said above that I’m not promising to have all the answers, and because of that I’ll be bringing in sustainability experts each month to help us with the topics – so for example I’ve got a food waste expert lined up for February, and a mending guru for May – and we’ll have  live group calls where you can ask these guys anything (well, anything relevant anyway..!)
  7. Inspiration
Get inspired by the different changes you could make, as well as seeing what other people are doing and the progress they are making – if they can do it, so can you!
  8. Motivation
I’m not going to lie, sometimes creating new habits and changing the things we’ve been doing sometimes for years can be hard. Having someone on hand to help you to break things down into manageable steps, and a whole community behind you who are on your side and rooting for you, can motivate you to keep going when things get tough.
  9. Learning
None of us know it all. I will share with you all of the knowledge and experience I have, but I know that we will all learn so much from each other as well. There will be some cold hard facts, some science behind the impacts our actions have, but we will each have our own ways of taking action, and there’s such a wealth of knowledge to share!
  10. Support
You will get personalised support to help you to identify the changes you want to make, the actions you need to take to get you there, and to keep you going and hold you accountable. In addition you will have a close knit community all on your wavelength, and on the same journey as you are, which is quite frankly invaluable!
  11. Make a difference
That’s what it’s all about after all – making a difference in our own lives, in the lives of our family’s, and creating those ripples of change that spread out into the world 🙂

This is my way to keep making a difference – I want to inspire, empower and support as many people as I can to create sustainable changes in their lives, and I would really love to help YOU to do that – come and join us!
