General ramblings, My Make Do and Mend Year

A new addition to the Make Do and Mend household…

Not another small person…

A tortoise 🙂

We had been mulling this over for ages, and then this weekend, “Speedy” serendipitously presented herself to us.

She arrived complete with the house she has been living in, and a heat lamp, and so is a true Make Do and Mend pet.

The Smalls are VERY excited!
And before you say it, yes, I do know they carry Salmonella. And yes, I am making sure the Smalls wash their hands if they have touched her.
Although they are under strict instructions not to pick her up as I am in fear of dropping incidents.

We were initially told that Hermann’s tortoises can live to 125-150 years old, and told BigSmall that she might still be around when he has kids, but with a bit more research, we found that the average life expectancy is 75 years.
Speedy is….
We are now ‘managing Big Small’s expectations’ a little more realistically…

Hubby is also very excited at the opportunity to make a whole new tortoise house for her, and I have told him that he is not allowed to buy any new wood, so it will be an upcycled marvel.
He keeps mentioning conservatories, and bedrooms-I think I might want to move in too…

Tortoises are the best. I’ve always wanted one, but kept being told them required loads of kit (vivariums etc). Will be v excited to hear how you get on (mostly so I can print it out, stick it in an ‘evidence in favour of getting a tortoise’ file, and hand it to my husband…)

We were a bit cavalier, and have scared ourselves a little now we have started to read up on tortoise care…!
      She is pretty cool though.

She’s lovely. How big is she?

We have a tortoise called George. He’s only a baby though so we should get about 50years out of him. He has his own patch of garden where we grow only food he can eat and We do joke that we could get him a pet hamster and a wheel so that he could make his own electricity. Then he’d be totally self sufficient! Lol! Like the idea of painting your phone number on the shell.

What do you grow for him Nicola? We really need to get more organised. Our garden has LOTS of clover, plantain and dandelion, but I need to go hunting for a bit more variety!
      Loving the idea of a self-sufficient hamster/tortoise combo 🙂

Clover, lettuce, dandelions (yes we actually try to grow dandelions) and some other bits I can’t remember what they are called. Basically those pots look like they are filled with weeds lol! Except the lettuces obviously. I’ll ask hubby if he can remember what the other plants are.

Great, thank you. Our garden is full of dandelions etc but might try to grow some other ones!

I had one when I was a child – it was called Leaky because of its biological reaction the first time I picked it up. It kept running away – and was once found on the platform of the local station 1.5 miles away…

Wow, 1.5 miles-that’s really funny! How did they know she was yours? Wonder where she was trying to get to on the train..?!

YAY congrats that’s fabulous! I’ve always wanted to a tortoise but living in a wind/solar power house I couldn’t justify the energy, and apparently you cant get ones without lamps  Great name though speedy, my son wanted to call our lightning!

      Hi Sarah
I am hoping that the lighting demands aren’t too excessive! Are you completely off grid?
She came with the name Speedy, and I didn’t want to confuse her by changing it…!

I had a tortoise as a child. It kept running away ( very slowly whilst we were away on holiday) and neighbours would have to return him

I did contemplate painting our phone number on her shell!
