Seasonal Sunday

September 22, 2013

The last day of Waste Less, Live More Week, and the end of the Better Food for All Challenge.

And it’s Seasonal Sunday.

This time of year really is the best to be eating seasonally.

But I have to confess that this is something I find hard to do sometimes.

When you walk into the supermarket, or even the farm shop or greengrocers, there is pretty much every fruit and veg there that you could want, so it is really hard to know what is in season and what isn’t.
Obviously we all know that things like strawberries and raspberries are not in season in the winter, but what about sweet potatoes, or squash? I have no idea.
And I have to confess that this is one of the reasons that we get a fruit and veg box from Riverford-it means I don’t have to agonise over what to buy and whether it is season, and also means we don’t get stuck in the rut of buying the same fruit and veg week in, week out.

If you too struggle to work out what is in season, all your (seasonal fruit and veg related) problems are now over, with this handy Interactive Seasonal Food Guide from the lovely people at Start.

Which shows that for September, there are no less than 37 seasonal fruit and vegetables to choose from-yum!
You can choose to search by month, to find out what is in season for any month of the year, or to search by item, to see when that particular thing is in season.
This video here, shows Michael from Start trying to pack a sustainable lunch, and bought a smile to my face-do watch it!

So now you can go to your nearest fruit and veg outlet, and pick the freshest and finest of seasonal goods and go home to cook up a feast!

I hope you’ve enjoyed this little mini-series, and I know that you are all thrifty, frugal waste-not, want-not-ers anyway, but sometimes we all need reminding just how lucky we are, and what a precious resource food is.
