Zero Waste Week

As I mentioned in my last post, September is looking set to be a hot bed of all things Make Do and Mend-hurray!
Along with the month long Festival of Repair, next week (beginning 7th September) is Zero Waste Week.

Zero Waste Week is now in it’s EIGHTH year!
And the theme for this year is Re-use.

Needless to say, I am a huge fan of re-use.
Here’s an old post from My Make Do and Mend Year when we went cold turkey on baby wipes, and cut up old towels to make flannels (it was waaaay easier to cope without baby wipes than I thought it would be!)
And we’ve re-used loads of other things too:

and more!
There are loads of tips for re-use and upcycling in the A-Z of Upcycling that Eco-Create, Remade in Britain and I put together for National Upcycling Day earlier on this year.

BI-A-Z of upcycling

And don’t forget that local groups like Freegle, and Buy Nothing groups, are fab ways to ensure that things get re-used and not sent to landfill.
Or host a Give and Take event at work or school.
Or get Swishing!

AND as this month is The Festival of Repair, I love that fixing things means that they can be re-used.
It’s all dovetailing so nicely 🙂

To get involved, join the other 1200+ people who have already signed up and made a Zero Waste Re-use pledge.
It can be anything you like: remembering to take your re-usable bags with you when you go shopping; re-fashioning something from your wardrobe; ditching disposable nappies; anything you like!
My pledge is to have a Buy Nothing week-I’m going to buy nothing all week (except food, obvs), so I will be forced to Make Do, and re-use what is in the house already.

You can also join in with not just one, but TWO Twitter chats during Zero Waste Week.
The first is on Day 1 (the 7th) at 11am, with Zero Waste Week founder Rachelle Strauss (@myzerowaste) and The Money Saving Expert Forum (@MSE_Forum) and they will be discussing how awesome re-use is at saving you money!
The second is #makedoandmendhour on the Thursday (10th)  8-9pm, where Rachelle will be joining me, and The Rubbish Diet (@therubbishdiet) for another Festival of Repair themed hour, with a focus on repair and re-use.

I’d love to hear your favourite re-uses.
Leave me a comment-I read every single one, and they make me 🙂

Not sure if the comment I tried to post will have got to you but in the hope that you don’t end up with two for the price of one, I’m very pleased today to have been able to hand over the pebbles to a fellow Freegler who was asking for such for his own garden????.

Thanks for sharing Jen – it’s fantastic to see a list of some of the reuse projects you’ve already done and guinea pig mansion is one I’m particularly fond of! I’m hoping you enjoy the week and it will be fun to do the twitter chats together! Have a great week and thanks for being such a great ambassador x
